The latest edition of this classic text is up to date with the inclusion of major advances within fuzzy logic as well as the removal of topics that are redundant or obsolete; resulting in a concise yet inclusive text that will ensure it retains its broad appeal at the forefront of the literature. This edition is oriented mainly towards methods and techniques, and is revised with every chapter featuring new illustrations and examples using matlab code that will benefit student learning in all basic operations, the generation of membership functions, and all the specialized applications in the latter chapters of the book. · introduction. · classical sets and fuzzy sets. · classical relations and fuzzy relations. · properties of membership functions, fuzzification, and defuzzification. · logic and fuzzy systems. · development of membership functions. · automated methods for fuzzy systems. · fuzzy systems simulation. · decision making with fuzzy information. · fuzzy classification. · fuzzy pattern recognition. · fuzzy arithmetic and the extension principle. · fuzzy control systems. · miscellaneous topics. · monotone measures belief, plausibility, probability, and possibility.
Fuzzy Logic With Engineering Applications 3Rd Ed Timothy J Ross 9788126531264 Books
From its humble beginnings in 1922 in infinite valued logics (ie uncertainty), fuzzy logic has grown exponentially both in theory and practice, and in applications as far flung as disc brakes, DNA sequencing, high speed trains, medical devices, musical synthesizers, camera apertures, star measurements, text mining, data mining, seismology, oceanography, biotechnology, web searches, aileron control, smart phone pen scripts, and much more. The subtle idea of Fuzzy Logic (FL) is that in uncertain or limited data (or too much data) conditions, POSSIBILITIES as well as probabilities can exist between 0 and 1, not just as stochastic weights, but actionable fractional values within algorithms and circuits, as meaningful and practical measurements and formulas. This valuable text is a great triple threat volume-- equally relevant for self study, courses, and professional reference. It has been extensively revised to include almost a total rewrite of the 1995 to present state of the art.
There are numerous other texts that are very good, but either incomplete or much too detailed and technical in one narrow area, and thus more appropriate for graduate research in specifically chosen areas, including theory. This text is robust in theory with just the right level of abstraction, but is really for both the practicing and student engineer, and leaves off just perfectly where the grad texts take off.
Some background in statistics, truth values and regular logic, mathematical logic, computational complexity, programming and related areas is helpful, but not required. The author does a great job of laying the foundation before moving into advanced applications, and you really can begin at a basic intelligent undergrad level and follow it upward.
There are very new areas like ecorithms that aren't covered, but you can mine the references or a seminal volume like Valiant (Probably Approximately Correct: Nature's Algorithms for Learning and Prospering in a Complex World) to fill in those details. As an engineer and a patent reviewer at payroy dot com, I am seeing numerous new filings using many new twists on FL-- so an additional audience for this fine volume is inventors in addition to researchers, students, engineers, circuit designers, etc.
Even game programmers are finding applications, which I think I can say without giving too much away! The most important point is that there really is no other alternative to this fine volume in thoroughness, quality and depth if you want to either learn, or apply FL in more depth. Highly recommended. Of the approximately 13 texts that are candidates for library purchases in our database in this area, this is #1.
CODE: As of this 2013 writing, the MATLAB web code on Wiley for this volume is still active-- very valuable indeed. If you buy the text used, you do NOT require any one time use codes that might be missing from the used text to access the extra features. Just be sure you get the 3rd edition if you do buy from Amazon warehouse or another Amazon third party used! The 1995 edition is way out of date today.

Fuzzy Logic With Engineering Applications 3Rd Ed Timothy J Ross 9788126531264 Books Reviews
Fantastic book!
It is and excellent book that covers both basic aspects of fuzzy logic and advanced aspects of the practical application of fuzzy logic.
Very good book for a solid background on Fuzzy Logic. Highly reccomented. Ross is a very involved author and enthousiastic supporter of Fuzzy logic theory use in problem solving. Try to solve some of the problems in the book. They provide much inside on real applications of the fuzzy logic Theory
Detailed and rich with examples
I bought this book not knowing what Fuzzy-Logic was - as I thought I might be using it in my research - which didn't happen - but I must say that this is a great book and it was easy for me to read and understand the concepts - the author spells everything out very clearly and provides graphics to assist in the explainations of the concepts.
This is a great resource for someone with no exposure to Fuzzy Logic. It walks through the basics of fuzzy set theory in a clear and fairly comprehensive manner. It ventures into applications regarding Fuzzy Logic Controllers, but only at an introductory level. This is a good place to start with Fuzzy Logic, but its insufficient for a stand-alone book in Fuzzy Logic Controllers.
Decent textbook on the subject. The main issue I have with this book is there's no answer key for a subset of the problems each chapter, making it so one cannot self study the material easily. I don't know how most people are when they self study material, but I like to actually solve problems and be able to check I have the logic right when I am learning, and it's impossible to check answers with this book alone. This is a frustration when someone as myself are working in industry and don't have a class where I can get problems graded or some answer key.
I hope that future versions can add answers for at least a couple problems per chapter so people who self study can make better use of this book.
